I can only really talk about myself so am not sure if this resonates with anyone else. My training is a bit up and down, with impacts from whether I am training for a race, or if I am trying to lose some weight, or maybe I feel as though my general mood needs a lift and I can impact that by doing some fitness. Also, the weather impacts everything as if I look out the window and it is dark and wet then I might reconsider if I will put my trainers on and go for a run.
When I look at my Garmin stats I can see from a pure volume perspective that between October and March I was only really averaging about 30km per month. I had entered a half for the start of May, but when I got to the end of April I realised that I was not going to hit the goals I wanted so I pulled out.
My reset has involved getting more volume per month, and being more consistent with that over a longer period. So, April and May has been to try and get to 100km per month and I look to be on track to achieve that. I still have my T&T which is approx 12k per week, and then if I do a long run at the weekend and it comes in around 12k, then I am going to close to target. Anything else I can do is a bonus, such as a few hill sprints.
I have seen recently that my capacity to be able to do these runs easier has been getting better, so I have now started to throw in a tempo/threshold run on either Tuesday or Thursday. The shame of not doing enough runs and getting enough volume and thus cancelling my May race, is giving way to seeing some improvements and giving me confidence that I will really kill my next half which is in October. I will put my runs in a table and add to the site so I can easily see my progress.
